I'm Having A Mid-Life Decorating Crisis

You know how much I like red - right?

Well.... lately, even though I still LURVE red, I find myself being drawn a lot more to more soothing and earthy colours like greys, greens, and various browns (although still with pops of beautiful, lovely colour!).

Plants too. I suddenly want a lot more plants around me.

Plus, not ever having been a lover of white walls, I seem to be noticing a certain gravitation towards them lately.

And, I've also always been one to cocoon myself in rooms that have lovely curtains to screen the light and make my rooms feel hidden away from the outside world in a sort of secret place of my own. A sort of dimly lit, mellow nest. Which I still adore...

BUT,

I'm slowly but surely developing this feeling of wanting barer windows with more light streaming in during the day.

This has NEVER been me for as long as I can remember.

Even though I simply love being outside, especially anywhere near beautiful trees and forests, I've not been one for looking through my windows outside. I'm either out there enjoying it, or inside hibernating.

Now I want to throw the windows wide and let the world in!

Hmmmmm.

Interesting.

And so, for whatever reason, I'm changing.

It may be just for now, or it might be a longer term thing. Who knows. Either way.........

COOL. :)

Love These Porcelain 'HOME' Candle Votives

From one of my favourite online stores, these votives embody the whole 'spirit of home' for me.  They just seem as if they'd create a  calm, glowing, nurturing, warm, soft, harmonious sort of vibe.

I have the word 'home' spelled out in large scrapbooking letters above a doorway (the first one you see as you enter my home through the front door), and it's such a simple way to remind myself of why I love where I live so much....

... it's not just my house.... it's my home.

Do you have the word 'home' spelled out anywhere at your place?

Etsy Dreaming ~ Zipper 8 Lighting ~ Atmosphere And Mood...

Lighting is one of the most essential areas to address when it comes to making a home feel right. One of my earliest posts opined about the remarkable effect lighting can have on our homes and the people within them.

There's all different sorts of lighting, but I love lighting that brings soft, glowing, moody atmosphere to a room.

I love cocooning myself in soothing, flattering, mellow light.

It makes me feel good! (And look better too - haha.)

These lights from Zipper 8 Lighting on Etsy are both atmospheric and unusual. The artist (they seem like 'art' to me) makes them from maps, book pages, drinking straws, old recycled plastic bags... an amazing feat.

Her name is Allison Patrick, and she's a recent graduate from Architecture School in New York City.

How glam does that sound!

They look so beautiful in their lit up state.

So eye-catching and sculptural.

I also like the earthy feel that comes from them. They just seem to give off good grounding vibes (especially the lights made from the pages of a book and map pieces - you know how I love books and maps)!

I think it's always special to be able to buy something that's gorgeous, and has been made from 'found' materials rather than 'manufactured' in a sterile environment.

I love them. What do you think?

You can find Zipper 8 Lighting here.

A Guest Post About Decorative Finishes

I've been flat out over the last few weeks as this is one of the busiest times of the year at work. So, when the folks from Arcadian Lighting contacted me about a guest post, I cheerfully agreed as it meant I got to 'take a post off'!

Here's their guest post about decorative finishes...

Anyone can buy a light fixture or accent chair from a chain market and call it decorating. But if you truly want to make these pieces your own, consider designing with decorative finishes.

Once relegated to the stippling or faux-finishing of drab, beige walls, more people are now customizing their pieces by using decorative finishing techniques on their table lamps, furniture, and even floors.

Take a look at some of these images for your own design inspiration. After that, break out your can of paints, glazes, sponges and dry brushes, and get to finishing!

(via)

Here is a chair that has been scavenged from Craigslist.  It was reupholstered in a velvet pea-green fabric and the frame was refinished with black lacquer.  Lacquering wooden furniture is easy; just sand the previous finish off, coat with primer and then paint it with a couple of coats of high-quality lacquer paint.

(via)

Boring old kitchen cabinets have been sanded and refinished with glossy black lacquer paint and a pretty gold trim.  Goodbye boring, hello chic!

(via)

Shown here is a wall that has been color-washed.  The wash of color is warm and rustic and will create the appearance of worn paint.  This finishing technique is very easy.  After preparing your walls for paint, mix together ¼ cup of water, colorant, and 2 cups of glaze.  Apply this mixture with a large sponge and finish it with a dry bush.

(via)

If you are able to, consider painting or finishing your floors.  The floor of this entryway has been finished in three different stains to create a gorgeous chevron-like pattern.

(via)

A junky, $5 table lamp found on Craigslist gets a makeover with several coats of matte paint. The base used to be coral red and the shade was dingy beige. This shabby chic lamp just went from drab to fab!

So, if you think you’ve found the perfect $10 chair or lamp but it’s too old and worn out, use a decorative finish to make it like new again. If you live in your own home, accent boring beige walls, ceilings or floors with a decorative finish.

Thanks for the guest post A.L!

A Gorgeous 'Nest' In Brooklyn by Suzanne And Lauren McGrath...

I spotted this very stylish and pretty Brooklyn Apartment over on Hip Hip Gin Gin, and the original photos (8 of them) and story can be found over here at Traditional Home.

Lauren was a fresh out of college 'fashion writer' when she was lucky enough to get hold of this delightful apartment. She then called on her mum, Suzanne, who has worked as an interior designer for years (including alongside Martha Stewart for 10 of them), to help her out.

The result, as you can see, is simple, pretty, welcoming, and just straight out gorgeous!

My favourite things are the little 'love seat sofa', the feather cushion, the bedside table with the twist legs, and that stunning mirror (bought for a bargain price at Anthropologie).

Here's what the Traditional Home story says about the table...  Lauren’s absolute favorite furnishing is an old desk-turned-vanity that Suzanne found cast out on a Brooklyn street 20 years ago. She appropriated it as a small corner writing table for her living room, then passed it on to Lauren for reinvention as a vanity. “Paired with an unusual vintage Lucite stool, it’s rejuvenated,” says Suzanne. “It’s probably not worth anything, but it has good bones.”

I love the yellow lamp too. It reminded me of the ones below that I'd seen over at Shine by S.H.O! I've had them pinned in my inspiration file for ages, and when I saw the yellow lamp in Lauren's apartment, I grabbed the opportunity to show you this pic too!

You can see some more pics, and read the interesting story of this charming little apartment, here.

A Living Room Full Of Comfort and Ease

I can just imagine secluding myself in here for at least a day, curled up with a good book, a mug of milo, and some of my favourite treats.

The atmosphere in this room is just so relaxing and nurturing.

The collection of items on the mantelpiece looks fascinating, and the grouping of mirrors would bounce light all over the place.

And, being who I am, I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on those delightful looking cushions. :)

There's even a mirror ball! (Imagine the firelight glinting off that at night, and reflecting in the mirrors too....it'd be like a room full of little stars.)

Gorgeous.

Come Dine With Me - No. 7 - So So Pretty

What a magical, whimsical, and downright pretty setting in which to share an intimate meal with a loved one.

Just gorgeous.

And, as always, as a part of this series.....

Ask yourself: 'Do I savour the ritual of eating with my family/friends whenever I can?'

Which leads to: ' When, or how, can I include this precious time together more?'

Because: There's something so primitively delightful and bonding about the 'breaking of bread' (so to speak) with our loved ones. It's a ritual and a tradition that's been crowded out and lost amongst television, technology, and texting! It's time to 'get together' and connect the old fashioned way again.

Cheers,

Linda.

Mi Casa Revista - A Dazzling House In Spain

Thanks to a fab post over at Handmade Evolution by Amy, I've discovered Mi Casa Revisita.

This discovery is utterly amazing, yet sucks at the same time, because this online site for the magazine Mi Casa Revista is full of glorious images..... but it's all written in Spanish!!

Aarrggh!

How I wish I could translate. Think I'd better give Google translate a whirl.

So whilst I've discovered this glorious home full of the most amazing light (people who've 'travelled' and come back to Australia always talk about the amazing 'light' in countries like Spain, and how it's so different to the light over here...... and now I think I believe them for real), I can't tell you anything about it because my ability to read Spanish is almost nil.

I do know the word 'casa' means 'HOME' though, as I once considered using it as part of a business name when my partner and I were talking about crafting our own furniture pieces.

Anyhow.... look at this stunning home full of fab furniture (keep your eye open for the armoire in the kitchen), beautiful objects, nice architectural details, brilliant splashes of colour, and the most astoundingly clear light.

What do you think?

Gorgeous?

All images from Mi Casa Revista here.

Cheers,

Linda.

P.S: Stay tuned for a special announcement, an invitation, and a give-away tomorrow!

Coming Out Of The Shadows....

In this fast paced, artificial, and often superficial world, one thing I try to do is follow the rhythms of nature as often as I can. The regular ebb and flow of day and night...... the ritual and routine of natural cycles. This connection to nature makes me feel calmer, more at peace, and just plain happier.

During the day, I love natural light to flow into my home. Its glorious, joyful, and energizing effect is so much better than that of artificial light.

The air feels different.

It makes me feel different..... more alive.

At night, I love the glowing pools of light my lamps give off. They create cozy havens, soft on the eye, soothing to the soul, replenishing to the spirit. Having harsh overhead lights on at night time stresses me out and tires me before my bed time! It drains and depletes me..... disconnects me from my 'rhythm'. It's not supposed to be 'bright as day' when it's night!

In her book Sensual Home Ilse Crawford beautifully sums up the effect of light on us....

'Light is probably the single most important area to address when it comes to making a home that feels right, and will make the quickest and most dramatic difference. If you want a stimulating environment you need variation, texture and shadows.'
She goes on to talk about natural light and the importance of shadows...

'Rely as little as possible on artificial light and make the most of natural light. Without it we feel depressed. Maximize the daylight you have, particularly in the winter months.
....We don't just need daylight - we need a degree of dimness too. The electric bulb has done away with total darkness. Many things, including us, look more beautiful coming out of darkness. And we need shadows for intimacy and thought. Bright light paralyses the imagination. To think and feel clearly we need to switch off our constantly roving eyes and allow our minds to wander instead. Deep shadows and darkness are essential because they dim the dominance of vision.'

Of candles she says...

When gaslight and electricity arrived they increased lighting levels twentyfold, eradicating shadow forever. Candles are our allies, bringing magical light into darkness. They have a remarkable effect on a room, by day or night, creating ever shifting patterns of light and shadow. Famously flattering, they mix well with modern lighting especially when this is dimmed, and have a hypnotic, soothing quality that encourages us to rest and meditate.
I have many, many candles at my place, and light them when I feel the need to rejuvenate, soothe, nurture, and spoil myself!

To unwind gently from a long day, to enjoy a book in my comfy chair bathed in the mellow glow, to share a meal by candlelight, these are the small yet simple pleasures that bring joy.

The candles I use are made from pure beeswax only, and produce the beautiful yellow flame only these candles can. They're also kind to the environment and your health, unlike many common candles.

Ask yourself: 'Am I making the most of natural light within my home?'

Which leads to: 'Am I also allowing for moments of dimness and shadow? Am I nurturing not only my visual needs but my mind as well?'

Because: To once again quote Ilse Crawford.... Light 'tends to be the last thing people think about when it comes to their homes', yet its effect is profound.

Cheers,

Linda.
